For consumers who support E85 (85% ethanol, 15% gasoline) and drive a flex-fuel vehicle, E85 became a little easier to find a fuel station location today when the 2,000th E85 station opened today in Davie, Florida a suburb of Miami. The station is owned by U-Gas, which has brought most of the E85 infrastructure to Florida. As part of the celebration, the station offered E85 for $1.00 a gallon at not only this station, but all stations where U-Gas sells E85.

Willie Urbieta, President of U-Gas is a huge supporter of ethanol and said during the press conference, “For me personally, it feels really good when I fuel up to know that I’m not sending money to countries that are not that friendly to us.”

Florida is committed to growing its biofuels industry through its “Farm to Fuel” initiative. This plan is designed to turn Florida-grown crops, agricultural waste and residues and other biomass into renewable fuels.

Florida Agriculture and Consumer Services Commissioner Charles H. Bronson hailed today as a “milestone, saying, “As ethanol and other renewable fuels become more widespread, the demand for the biofuels produced on our farms and ranches will only increase. It will reduce our dependency on foreign oil and give agricultural producers in Florida alternative crops to keep their farming operations viable.”

This pump station location has also opened on the cusp of President Obama’s letter to the (find here) Governors’ Biofuels Coalition applauding their efforts and his commitment, on behalf of America, to reduce our dependence on foreign oil in part with biofuels development from non-corn feedstocks. It is rumored that significant dollars will be dedicated to ethanol infrastructure development within the next few months and that the funds will be administered through the Department of Energy (DOE).

The station location opening was successful with the collaboration of several organizations including the Renewable Fuels Association (RFA), Protec Fuel Management, Urbieta Oil, U-Gas, General Motors, and Enterprise. RFA’s Director of Market Development, Robert White was on hand for the event and noted that ethanol is no longer a “corn belt” fuel. “Celebrating the 2,000th E85 station in the U.S. in the Miami metro area clearly shows that E85 is not a Midwest only product.  It is able to be transported and sold anywhere in the country.”
